black x over macbook battery icon and not charging
So my macbook battery died.
I think the situation goes like this: I've closed the lid, while the mac is sleeping the battery slowly drains of power and dies.
The result of this is that the macbook battery will not charge. And you get a black X over the battery icon in the menu bar.
The mac however does still power on and run okay if the magsafe power adapter is plugged in. Of course as soon as you unplug it - kills it.
Apple's solution is wrong
After many an hour searching for a solution to no avail - I have finally managed to fix the issue.
Apple's solution to reset the PMU is wrong however - well, not resetting the PMU, just their instructions:
- If the computer is on, turn it off.
- Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
- Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
- Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
- Press the Power button to restart the computer.
The actual solution
Now I cannot claim to be the genius to have solved this. I first saw it here: http://blog.laptopbatterylife.com/2011/01/10/macbook-battery-not-charging-fix/. I am only posting this here again, as it took me a couple of hours to find that video and I thought it might help if I add some more links to it.
The difference is small but significant: Plug the power back in first, then the battery. (wait for the green light first)
Simples! And good luck!
Alternatively you could just buy a new replacement macbook battery on Amazon
